Configure a Garry's Mod dedicated server

Anti-DDoS Game Protection

IPv4 and IPv6 addresses
OVHcloud dedicated servers have a public IPv4 address and several IPv6 ranges. You can also order up to 256 additional IP addresses. Additional IPs are very useful for offering optimal reactivity in the event of an incident — particularly by switching services over more quickly as part of a failover strategy. Also, with the IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) console — accessible via the OVHcloud Control Panel or via an API — you have a direct connection to your dedicated server. If your server becomes unavailable, you can keep control of it via its public IP address.
What are the steps for creating a GMod dedicated server?
1. Choose your server and setup.
The server model we would recommend is completely dependent on how you intend to use your Game dedicated server — i.e. whether it works in a cluster, or as a standalone machine. For events like LANs and e-sports competitions, we recommend using Game-1 and 2 servers. Check the recommended minimum configuration for a GMod dedicated server. It will depend on the number of players on each server, and the resource usage that is typical for the gameplay mode you intend to offer. Since Garry’s Mod is quite resource-intensive in terms of CPUs, we recommend provisioning additional resources.
If you are a hosting provider and want to create several virtual private servers (VPS) on your dedicated servers, opt for the Game-2 range. Virtualising environments requires a high volume of resources.
Once you have chosen the type of server, you can launch its installation from the OVHcloud Control Panel. First, select your operating system (Windows Server or Linux). You can then log in and configure it to suit your needs, and the specifics of your infrastructure. To help you with this, please refer to our dedicated server documentation.
2. Configure your GMod server.
Follow the recommended steps below to prepare your custom Garry's Mod server:
- You can configure it directly from the Steam Workshop.
- Install the server files via SteamCMD.
- Enter your command lines, admin credentials, and passwords.
- Ensure that UDP ports 1200, UDP ports 27000 to 27020 and TCP ports 27030 to 27039 are open.
- Launch your server for the first time, then reboot it (recommended step).
- Your server is now ready to use.
