Scalable and cost-effective solution

Executive summary

Sportano is a major online sports store that brings together top brands and products for a wide range of sports, including cycling, fitness, winter sports, water sports, outdoor sports, and combat sports. Founded in 2021, the company is one of the fastest growing e-commerce platforms in its category, offering more than 600 brands and over 200,000 products, which are available to order from the central warehouse within 24 hours. And all this is combined with professional advice and qualified experts.

The challenge

Sportano is a young but rapidly growing company that, despite its short history, has established itself as an industry leader. From the very beginning, the company has set itself the goal of selling products in a secure environment and using the fastest possible solutions. During its first year, Sportano implemented several cloud solutions, which changed or evolved as the business expanded. After a period of rapid growth, the company decided to look for a partner able to provide more comprehensive support. What's more, Sportano also wanted to optimize costs, scale and store large volumes of data, as well as have uninterrupted sales, which could have been threatened in the transition to another service provider.

"A big challenge for us was the transfer of a huge amount of data - even if only images and product information - it's terabytes of data. We wondered how we could do it so that the whole process would allow for continuous sales, and the site would be responsive and accessible to consumers during the transition,"

Grzegorz Kupidura, CTO at Sportano

The solution

OVHcloud worked closely with Sportano to identify their needs and find a solution that would increase scalability and performance, whilst also handling large volumes of data.

For greater scalability, Sportano adopted OVHcloud's Public Cloud service, specifically making use of flex instances: single size disk instances that can be resized to higher or lower storage spaces as required. Such flexibility would enable Sportano to increase their data easily and also handle dynamic changes in website traffic more efficiently.

To simplify management of the Sportano platform, the company also adopted Kubernetes Clusters and OpenStackAPI, two technologies that enable faster deployment of containers and greater control over compute, storage and networking. Using these solutions together would also help Sportano to scale their storage and manage high website traffic using OpenStack load balancing features.

Using the vRack private network also delivered significant benefits, greatly improving the efficiency of communication between systems within the Sportano platform, including ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and PIM (Product Information Management). Finally, as it is built on OVHcloud's trusted multi-datacentre infrastructure, the Public Cloud service also enabled Sportano to benefit from greater stability and computing performance. The solution also allowed Sportano to transfer data from the previous provider rapidly and without negative consequences.

The result

Establishing a partnership with OVHcloud helped Sportano to adopt efficient cloud networking, storage and containerisation services. This enabled Sportano to cut costs by 50% using a transparent pay-as-you-go commercial model, whilst also boosting performance and productivity. The company also benefited from extensive technical support, which was highly responsive during the process of transition from one public cloud system to another, not to mention the day-to-day support at each subsequent stage of cooperation. Sportano looks forward to further collaboration with OVHcloud in the future as its business continues to grow.

"OVHcloud was with us from the very beginning of the transformation of our systems. From the very start of our collaboration, we received an account manager, and as soon as the first challenges appeared, they provided comprehensive advice and solutions that helped to improve the quality of our services."
